Car Talk finalish
INT. ROVER - DAY
White Sands area.
Hunter driving, Jackie front passenger. Tom behind Hunter, Chloe behind Jackie.
TOM: When's the last time you were on a horse?
CHLOE: A Santa Barbara beach ride with my mom a couple years ago. And, if a mule counts, two years before that at Grand Canyon.
TOM: I'd say a mule counts. Good time?.
Chloe nods.
CHLOE: Have you been?
TOM: I have. Had an aunt and uncle who lived in Flagstaff. We went out for a week one summer.
CHLOE: We being whom?
TOM: Mom, dad, me and Ruthie.
CHLOE: How old were you twelve. The day we drove to the canyon was Ruthie's tenth birthday.
HUNTER: How did you get to Flaqstaff?
TOM: Drove.
HUNTER: In what?
TOM: Sixty-one Chrysler three-hundred. Mom's car.
HUNTER: What was dad's car?
TOM: Fifty-nine Chevy Apache pickup.
HUNTER: What was your first car?
TOM: Sixty-four Pontiac G-T-O.
HUNTER: Original muscle.
TOM: Yessir. My dad and both grandfathers gave it to me on my sixteenth birthday. Much to the concern of mom and both grandmothers.
HUNTER: Three eighty-nine?
TOM: Yep.
HUNTER: Transmission?
TOM: Four-speed manual.
HUNTER: That's a lot of car for a seventeen-year-old.
TOM: It was. I didn't drive it a whole lot. It was made clear to me it might be worth some money someday. So while it was technically mine I always considered it to be the family's. An investment.
HUNTER: What became of it?
TOM: Put it in the garage when I went to Vietnam, crashed it in Mexico a few months after I got back.
HUNTER: A story you'd be willing to share sometime?
TOM (beat): Sure.
A pause.
CHLOE: Selfie with me, Tom.
TOM: Long as ya send it to me.
CHLOE: Deal.
Chloe scoots close to Tom, aims phone to take selfie.

location scout 2: FM 337/Gil's gate
INT. TOM'S TRUCK - DAY
Hunter driving, Wanda in the middle, Ruth on front passenger side, on Farm-to-Market Road 337 east of Medina, Texas.
Hunter seeks clarification re Gil and Maria, having assumed Maria is his daughter. No, per Ruth, she's his daughter-in-law, which gets to Danny, Gil's late son and his death in Afghanistan as a Marine, thus making a widow of Maria and Roberto and Rodrigo fatherless.
This conversation ends when they reach the gate of Gil's ranch.
R, W, H Table Talk
INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT
Describe. Adjacent kitchen.
Ruth, Wanda, Hunter seated at the table. Closed photo album near empty bottle of red wine. Each with a near-empty glass.
RUTH: Is the wine alright, Hunter?
HUNTER: It's great. Barbara's parents live not so far away from this vineyard.
RUTH: Do they drink wine?
HUNTER: Oh yes. Probably semi-officially connoisseurs. They've got a pretty good collection.
RUTH: I've got a few bottles. We'll try something different tomorrow night.
HUNTER: Where do you shop?
RUTH: There's a store in Fredericksburg. And a few wineries in the area.
HUNTER: So I've heard.
RUTH: Maybe we can visit one when you're back.
HUNTER: It's a date.
WANDA: Are you a wine drinker?
HUNTER: I'll have a glass on occasion. Jackie and I have shared a couple bottles. I'm more a beer with dinner. guy.
Each sips.
RUTH: Foglost seems to have a little to do with drinking.
Hunter smiles.
HUNTER: It does. You've read it?
RUTH: Finished it night before last.
WANDA: I was going to start when Tom finished.
RUTH: Gil's almost done. We've all read everything you've written. That can be found, anyway. It sure is a vivid depiction of what drinking can do.
HUNTER: Personal experience probably helped in that regard.
RUTH: Where are you with drinking today? If you don't mind me asking.
HUNTER: To quote Tom, y'all can ask me anything ya want. Where I am today and have been for a few years is that dinner beer and the occasional glass of wine, like with Jackie or dinner with a friend. Did Tom drink?
Ruth and Wanda look at each other, Ruth nods.
WANDA: He did not, except an occasional beer when he was fishing with Gil or Clem. There was a time in his life in his early thirties he talked about.
Ruth nods.
RUTH: Whiskey. He and Gil would go to Mexico and, as Tom put it, "get a little lost and found."
HUNTER: Is that something Gil might be willing to talk about?
Ruth nods.
HUNTER (CONT.): Tom mentioned he was in Vietnam.
Wanda and Ruth nod.
WANDA: Did he talk about it?
HUNTER: No. It came up regarding his abbreviated rodeo career.. We were going to get back to it.
RUTH: I think Gil would be able and willing to tell you more about that, if that's something you'd be interested in..
HUNTER: I would of course. Was Gil there?
Ruth nods.
RUTH: I thought we'd leave around nine and have breakfast at Tom's favorite place for his Denver omelet.
Wanda smiles.
HUNTER: Sounds good. I'm on y'all's schedule.
Ruth smiles, Wanda's grows.
RUTH: Well my schedule's about bedtime.
WANDA: I'm right there with you.
Ruth and Wanda finish their wine, Hunter swirls and finishes his. All stand.
HUNTER: I reckon I'll call Chloe and catch her up per her orders.
RUTH: My goodness Hunter she seems so precious.
WANDA: Tom almost couldn't stop...
Wanda stops herself, tears in her eyes. Ruth puts an arm around her.
RUTH: Hunter...oh goodness, now watch me start.
Wanda laughs, puts an arm around Ruth.
RUTH (CONT.) I am going to stop because I will start but I just have to say all the photos y'all took...
WANDA: Priceless.
Ruth wipes tears away.
WANDA (CONT.) And I have to say, Hunter, that selfie your mother rook with Tom at Lake Tahoe.
RUTH: Oh my God.
WANDA: Rather, IN Lake Tahoe.
RUTH: She was exactly as Tom described but -
WANDA: But beyond beautiful.
RUTH: You've probably noticed Chloe's resemblance.
HUNTER: I have. And noticed Tom's to the detail recollection of what she was wearing and the perfume she wore.
RUTH: Tom has a photographic memory. Had.
WANDA: Lilac.
HUNTER: That's right. Funny, by the way.
WANDA/RUTH: What's that?
HUNTER: The smell of Tom's cologne permeates his room.
WANDA/RUTH: I just smelled it.
Silence. Ruth leads them to the kitchen, turns off the light, they enter kitchen.
Ruth and Wanda porch, Hunter arrive
EXT. RUTH'S FRONT PORCH - DAY
Each in a rocker facing the quiet street. Light BREEZE RATTLES THE SEASHELL CHIMES.
RUTH: Storm on the way.
WANDA: I saw that on the weather channel. Corpus is battening down the hatches. Looks like we'll miss the brunt of it.
RUTH: Yep. Thought we'd shoot for getting back before it starts.
WANDA: I'm all for that. Do you know if Hunter knows about Gil?
RUTH: I don't. I guess Maria was pretty shocked when he told her who's coming over for dinner.
WANDA: I'm so looking forward to seeing her and the boys.
RUTH: They've each grown a several inches since last time you did. And both looking more and more like Danny.
Silence awhile before we hear TOM'S TRUCK'S ENGINE, louder as it nears. Ruth and Wanda stand as one and watch the truck come into view, Hunter at the wheel, looking at them as he nears the driveway.
INT. TRUCK
Hunter's POV as he turns into the driveway, watches Ruth and Wanda staring at him. He parks at the garage door.
EXT. PORCH/DRIVEWAY
Hunter gets out, climbs the steps to the porch, opens his arms to hug them both. Wanda takes one of his hands, Ruth the other, and lead him to the door and into the house.

Specifically the fairway of HOLE 2, tee at 55-seconds into video.
At 1:03 note the cart on the path at the crest of the hill, under cover of oak,
B-i-n-g-o.
EXT. FAIRWAY - HUNTER RANCH GOLF COURSE - HOLE 2 - DAY
So, something like:
Jan and Barbara in their cart crest hill where path is shaded by oak, followed by Brian and John in theirs.
John asks Brian about his son's baseball status, son is going to play at Cuesta (College). Brian re "Barb says" re Hunter and Chloe visiting Tucson for a tour of the town and campus re softball scholarship offer.
All stop where Barb and Jan get out to play their balls, each getting club from bag. They're all PGA-worthy attire, down to the cleats and gloves.
Jan's and Barb's skirts show their athlete-toned legs, as do their polos flatter their arms. Jan wears a visor, Barb a ballcap.
Brian and John in polyester and polo, Brian nearer stylish. He wears a visor, John a Pebble Beach ballcap.
The green they're aiming for is concealed. The tee-box behind them is at least 150 yards away.
Jan is back, she'll hit first, she goes to her ball in the middle of the fairway just beyond the sand bunker she's avoided. Barb's ball is ahead of hers by thirty yards but near the rough. Two other balls are ahead, one farther than the other, another bunker and bend to be navigated.
at the lip of a sand bunker, the other ahead, having safely avoided it
Jan's back is to the group as she walks. Barbara stands at their cart. Brian and John observe from theirs.
JOHN: I don't want to jinx your -
JAN: Then hush.
All smile except Jan, who approaches her ball with focus.
JOHN: Whatcha hittin', hon?
She shakes her head. John looks at Barb, shrugs his shoulders, she shows him six figures.
JOHN (CONT.) Six, huh?
Barb's eyes roll, her shoulders sag in faux collapse. Brian muffles his laughter in both hands.
JOHN (CONT.) Think that'll give ya the -
JAN: John.
John shushes himself with a finger over his lips.
JOHN: Now she's focused.
JAN: And still not deaf.
All eyes go big. Jan arrives at her ball, turns toward them as she looks at it, the fairway and bunker in front of her, looks at them, addressing John.
JAN (CONT.) Ya know what would give me even more focus?
JOHN: Um, maybe uh friendly wager. Not that I'm saying you're predictable.
BARBARA: Oh boy.
Brian shakes her head. Jan looks up to stare spears back.
JOHN (WHISPER): Doh.
Jan slowly positions herself to hit the ball at John.
BRIAN: Will she?
BARBARA: I don't know.
JAN: Mister Freeman.
JOHN: Misses Freeman.
Jan walks toward them.
BARBARA: Nice, dad.
JAN: Barb, would you please hand me my fairway wood..
Jan stares at John as she passes to make the exchange with Barbara and as passes on her way back to her ball before turning to her target.
BARBARA (over shoulder): I put this between and past those two oaks...
JOHN: Yes dear?
JAN: It's yes to the dog.
BARBARA: What dog?
JAN: The dog I've pretended to have second thoughts about getting.
Jan arrives at her ball, turns to them
BARBARA: This is news. Why pretending?
JOHN: To see how much she really wants one. Too.
JAN: Dum dee dum.
JOHN: Deal.
Jan steps to the ball, addresses, the wag, the look down the fairway, the swing that sends the ball on a low line drive toward.
JOHN: Damn.
BRIAN: That's gonna roll.
JOHN: Damn.
The ball lands and does indeed roll to a stop between and just past the oaks. All applaud. Jan bows, walks to them. Barbara high-fives her as she passes to her ball.
BARBARA: Hellava shot mom.
Jan stares at John as she nears.
BRIAN: Great shot, Jan.
Jan puts her club in bag.
JAN: Thank you, Brian. I haven't hit a ball in ten years.
She sits in the driver's seat of her cart, calls back to John.
JAN (CONT.) And don't you think for a heartbeat that I don't know damn well you want that dog as much as I do.
JOHN: How's tomorrow?
Jan smiles.
JAN: After farmer's market?
JOHN: After breakfast.
She turns to him, nods. All turn to Barbara arriving at her ball. She addresses almost exactly as Jan had. She drops clubhead to tee, looks down fairway, pulls back when her PHONE RINGTONES TYPEWRITER SOUND.
JAN/JOHN: Hunter.
Barb gets phone from pocket answers after RETURN ZING.
BARBARA (FAINT) Hey.
They watch her listen, finally look up toward them, pocket her phone, get her ball. A FOURSOME arrives on the tee behind them.
JOHN/JAN: Something's happened.
Barbara arrives, tears in her eyes. Brian gets out of cart to meet her.
JOHN?JAN: What's wrong, Barb?
BARBARA: Tom Walker died in the night at Hunter's.
JOHN: Jesus.
JAN: Oh no.
Silence. Barbara slips into Brian's embrace.
BARBARA: Chloe's coming home. She lands in San Francisco at four.
Silence. Finally:
JOHN: Let's go.
Barbara gets in cart, Jan drives them away down the path, John and Brian follow.

location scout 1: the golf course
Self -indulgence silliness but since this blog is coming to an end, thus rendered a scratch pad as segue into Finally Final, I'ma scratch.
Decided a good look re the golf course scene is camera on tee box and Jan and Barbara arriving in their cart, followed by John and Brian in theirs, coming into view when they crest a hill, thus requiting a hill to crest.
Had basically decided on Hunter Ranch anyway, over Paso Robles Golf Course. Officially perfect now, given the look I imagine.

JAN: Santa Rose Creek to Cambria.
BARBARA: Nice.
JAN: Lunch at Oysterville. Do we know if she's found her subject for her video project?
BARBARA: We do. Horse day.
JAN: Really.

JAN: When is it due?
BARBARA: First week in October.
JAN: Can't wait to see it.
BARBARA: And.
JAN: And.
BARBARA: Hunter says the birthday vehicle issue has been settled.
JAN: Really.
BARBARA: Yes.
JAN: Cue drumroll.
BARBARA: Hint.
JAN: Okay.
BARBARA: Her surfboard will fit in the bed.
MASSEUSE, 30, enters, with two towels.
MASSEUSE: Ready for your massages?

Chloe and John in the Jag
INT./EXT. JAGUAR XKR CONVERTIBLE - DAY
Top down, Chloe driving, John in the front passenger seat, cruising a narrow winding road through rolling hills populated by oaks.
John in new blue jeans, boat shoes, polo shirt complemented by Paso Robles Golf Course ballcap. Chloe in corduroy pants, running shoes, raglan-style SLO HS SOFTBALL shirt, beanie.
Awhile before Chloe speaks.
CHLOE: You would have liked him.
JOHN: I wish we could have met.
CHLOE: I do too. And he would have liked you.
JOHN: What about me do you think he'd have liked?
Pause.
CHLOE: Your sense of humor, for one.
JOHN: What about it?
CHLOE: Dry. Subtle. Clever.
JOHN: As opposed to knee-slapping, stomach-hurting hilarious guffawing.
CHLOE: Yes.
JOHN: Knock knock.
Chloe smiles.
CHLOE: Who's there?
JOHN: Ida.
Chloe beams.
CHLOE: Ida who?
JOHN: Ida asked him about cowboying.
CHLOE: What would you have asked him?
JOHN: What he most liked and disliked about it. If he disliked anything about it.
CHLOE: He did.
JOHN: Alright.
CHLOE: He hated to have to put down an animal. He had to shoot his own horse once but I can't talk about that. Fixing fences wasn't one of his favorite things to do, especially in the cold. He liked being outdoors, being on a horse.
JOHN: Of course.
CHLOE: Being in places that were, quote, easy on the eyes. He asked about you.
JOHN: Yeah.
CHLOE: Where you grew up, went to school, what kind of law you practiced.
They round a bend and see ahead on Chloe's side a COWBOY using a fence stretcher to repair a break in the line of a barbed-wire fence. His palomino horse is tied to the limb of an oak and at repose under its shade. John and Chloe look at each other, Chloe slows down as they near the cowboy who looks up as they pass - he is a dead-ringer for Tom at 30 - and tips his hat as they go by and wave back. John turns to keep his eyes on the cowboy, Chloe keeps her eyes on him in the rearview mirror. The cowboy takes off his hat to wave it. Chloe and John wave back and round the bend, the cowboy out of view. Awhile before Chloe speaks.
CHLOE: Grampa.
JOHN: Yes.
CHLOE: That was Tom at 30.
JOHN: I see the resemblance.
